What fonts are best for readability on the web?

Choosing proper fonts is crucial to have a readable and convenient website. The best fonts that should be used for the web can be easily read and adapted to various screens. Here are some popular Web Designing font styles and tips for improving readability.

1. Sans-serif fonts

A sans-serif font is a type of font that does not have an extra design stroke, and it is known as serif. These fonts are ideal for screens that require the use of small text.

Examples:

  • Arial: A font that is very common and can be utilized in almost every context, giving out an artistically plain, in its most basic use.
  • Helvetica: A versatile font that is as suitable for a businessman as it is for a computer programmer.
  • Roboto: Created by Google, this can be easily viewed and read on PC and particular devices.
  • OpenSans: The font that is used most frequently for web content that is easy to read.
  • Lato: A clear and business-like font with friendly rounded shapes for the letters.
  • Montserrat: A geometric sans-serif type that is good for headers.

2. Serif fonts

Serif fonts possess strokes of relatively small sizes called serifs along the limbs of their characters. They are frequently employed in blog posts or articles and they provide a traditional look.

Examples:

  • Georgia: Made for digital display, for the letter to be easily read and distinguishable.
  • Times New Roman: A standard font commonly used for the text that forms the body of a section or article.
  • Merriweather: Design for a newspaper with a modern look that can be read on the screen.
  • PlayfairDisplay: It is perfect for headings because of the classic look it accuses.

3. Monospaced Fonts

Monospaced fonts contain equal amounts of space, either between two words, or between two letters, and are ideal for programming or technology data.

Examples:

  • Courier new: An old-favorite font that is usually used for coding or technical purposes.
  • Consolas: It is an effective and most importantly, readable font for programmers.
  • Source Code Pro: This font is good for displaying code samples.

4. Humanist Fonts

The Humanist fonts are neither too geometric nor too script-like, they come with balanced strokes and an easy-going appearance and are suitable for everyone.

Examples:

  • Verdana: Designed for screens where the letters are more spaced than usual to increase readability.
  • Tahoma: Slight – great for the body text when designing websites and applications.

5. Consider the font size and line spacing

  • Font Size: The minimum recommended size should be 16 pixels for body text to enhance easy reading throughout the website. For better clearness of screens, one could go for 18-20 pixels.
  • Line Spacing: There should be lines between 1.5 to 2 times the font sizes to make the text easier.

6. Choose the Correct Colors for Readability

  • Contrast: It is easier to read dark text on a light background or light text on a dark background than on a comparative background.
  • Avoid Bright Colors: Avoid having the text very brightly colored since this could strain the eye.

7. Fonts to Avoid

  • Too fancy or Decorative Fonts: These can be very hard to read and must be used only for logos or titles.
  • Unprofessional Fonts (e.g., Comic Sans): Some of these fonts do not look very serious and are not suitable for most websites such as business websites.

8. Web-safe and Web Fonts

  • Web-Safe Fonts: Arial, Georgia, and Verdana are standard fonts on all platforms, and make sure that the site has a consistent feel across devices.
  • Web Fonts (e.g., Google Fonts): Some specific features and options come with custom web fonts while others are compatible, and perform well.

Suggested Pairings:

  • Modern Style: Roboto with Open Sans for body text, and Montserrat for headings.
  • Traditional Style: Georgia or Merriweather ordered for body texts should be followed with Helvetica or Arial for headings.

Choosing fonts that are clear, beautiful, and related makes it possible to generate a well-functioning and aesthetically pleasing site.
